Sake is a jewel of Japanese culture, and the technical intricacies of its production process make it a unique presence amongst the world’s alcoholic beverages. Yet in a world where wine and beer have become globally enjoyed beverages, sake has until very recently been relatively little known in markets outside Japan. Similarly, where beer and wine have been produced in ever more countries, sake breweries overseas have been very few. The last few years have seen consistent growth in global sales of sake, and the establishment of sake breweries in ever more regions across the globe. Compared to beer and wine, sake’s global footprint is still small, but these developments show that Japan’s national drink is entering a new age of global development and competition.
